First Grade Readiness Skills

Alphabet Knowledge:

   Students entering first grade should be able to identify all of the letters of the alphabet in capital and lower-case form and also be able to produce the sounds of all the alphabet letters.

Writing:

   Students entering first grade should be able to write all of the letters of the alphabet in capital and lower-case form and be able to differentiate between the two.  Students should be able to write their first name, beginning with a capital letter and all the other letters of their name in lower-case letters.  Students should know that sentences are written from left to right.

Sight Words:

   These are the sight words that students should be able to read upon entering first grade.

Math:

   Students are expected to count from 1 to 100 aloud.

Personal Skills:

   Students should be able to tie their own shoes and zip their own clothing and jackets.  They should also know personal information such as:

  • First and last name
  • Parents' first and last names
  • Home telephone number
  • Home address, including city
